.thanksgiving + america.

I won't beat myself up over my lack of posts if you won't! I'll share soon what craziness has been going on in our lives that has kept me too busy to blog (only good stuff, I promise)!

Did you get a magazine in the mail from the Smithsonian recently?
I don't subscribe, but got a promo magazine: 101 Objects that Made America

It was so fun to reflect on our country's history this day before we thank God for our home and blessings.
I wanted to share some of my favorite objects...

Lewis and Clark's Compass

Lewis and Clark's expedition has always fascinated me and I think this is such a great representation of the courage and curiosity that made our country what it is today. I always wonder what they felt when they saw the mighty Pacific for the first time.

Louis Armstrong's Trumpet

I think this is such a great addition! Music has such an incredible influence in our culture, and I think this is such an iconic instrument to add to the list!
Irving Berlin's piano is also on the list (he wrote White Christmas and many other wonderful pieces of music).

Smithson's Will

Do you know who James Smithson was? I didn't.
But I am familiar with his legacy: the Smithsonian Institution.
He left the United States 11 boxes of gold coins in his will ($10.8 million today!).
Congress created the Smithsonian with the money in 1846.
And guess what? James Smithson had never been to the United States.

These are just a few objects I thought were particularly interesting. The whole article is available online here.
Check it out and let me know what you thought was a unique or fun addition to the list!

.freedom.

It is the Soldier, not the minister,
Who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

.years.

It's been six years to the day that my sweet husband got down on one kneww and asked, "will you?"
(It's easy for me to remember this anniversary as it coincides with the Marine Corps' birthday, an ironic and weird coincidence!)

5 1/2 years of marriage
8 months apart
3 apartments
2 babies
2 states
1 life

It's been filled with hard times and wonderful times.
And I can't wait to see what the next years bring.

.november.

It was November - the month of crimson sunsets, parting birds, deep, sad hymns of the sea, passionate wind-songs in the pines.
