.summer + easy-living.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
- John Lubbock

Sometimes, you just got to take it easy and eat popsicles with sweet little babes.

.cake + anxiety.

A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety.
- Aesop

I love cake. Who doesn't love cake? I know how bad it is for you, but it's delicious!
Now I look at cake in a whole new light.
Without giving you my whole medical history (TMI, anyone?), I have been suffering a variety of symptoms for years. The worst symptom has been anxiety, with many severe attacks. This constant, unwelcome companion has interrupted my life more times than I care to admit. Until now.
During my trip back to Seattle, I went to see a doctor that has been helping my sweet mama. And thanks to his careful listening and unique approach, he finally showed me the root of my problem. Severe inflammation due to food allergies.
Um, what?
 I'm not crazy? Or doomed to live with constant anxiety?! And it all comes back to cake. (And other things, because I obviously didn't live on cake alone!)
It has been one month of no gluten, no soy, and no milk or yogurt. It has been one month of energy, optimism, and no anxiety.
I am rethinking the way my family eats...and it is so worth it. It's daunting at times, but comparing how I felt with how I feel now, I do not miss it. Not one bit. Yay!

Thank you, Mama, for making it possible for me to see your doctor. Thank you, Sweet Family, for standing alongsideme with this new diet.

.suits + aviators.

It has been an eventful couple of weeks around our home!
My sweet husband has worked very hard for a long time to finally receive his flight suit!

It has been a long road to come here and we still have a long ways to travel, but it is so nice to pause and celebrate with dear friends!

And my sons are completely in love with the aviators.

We'll be buying them a pair each soon!

.throwback + gardens.

Are you familiar with the internet trend of "throwback thursday" where you share a photo that is, well, a throwback to the past? I kind of like that idea. It is always fun to see how we have changed...and to reflect on our past. So join me for the next couple Thursdays for throwback thursday!

Whenever I think of what a home flower garden should look like, I think of my childhood home and the beautiful garden there. It was shady and cool and green all the time (a major perk of growing up in the Pacific Northwest!). To me, it was simply beautiful. I had two favorites in this garden that are still my favorites today: there was a lovely, old lilac tree that grew right outside my bedroom window. Lilacs are still one of my favorite flowers today. And one year my mother had a lemon verbena plant. I don't know how  old I was, but I remember being delighted with the scent transferring to my fingers. It always reminds me of Anne Shirley...

"October though it was, the the garden was still very sweet with dear, old-fashioned, unworldly flowers and shrubs -- sweet may, southern-wood, lemon verbena, allyssum, petunias, marigolds, and chrysanthemums."

What sweet memories!

.seasons + transitions.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a tme to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time t.o love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

What about the "in-between" times? The times of transition? The times that come as you leave one season of life for another?
My little family is in a transition time right now...with lots of changes in all areas of our lives.
We are transitioning from our sweet vacation time with family in the beautiful Pacific Northwest back to "real-life" down here in Pensacola. It's not easy to get back into the groove of housework and chores.
My littlest guy is making the transition from a baby to a toddler...which means constant adjustment on our part as his parents...nap times, what he eats, when he eats, what he can reach...I seem to be rearranging a lot of cupboards..
I am making a diet transition. No more gluten, soy, and most dairy products for this girl! (Plus a few more random eliminations)'s a transition rethinking how I cook, what I cook, what I snack gets tiring.

So I have been slowly learning how to transition well:
Allow for days of rest. Watch movies with your kiddos and snuggle on the couch. Transitions for my boys means they require a lot more interaction. Sitting on the couch together helps with that. Forget about your chores; they'll still be there in a couple hours.
Have simple meals. Breakfast-for-dinner is happening a lot around here. Scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, and fresh fruit is nutritious and easy!! (The easy part being key!)
Schedule time with friends. Fellowship is paramount for me when it comes to dealing with transition. It is so uplifting to be reminded that you are not alone in what you're going through. Sometimes you just need a friend to come along side you and commiserate about the trials of teething babies.

What do you do when you find yourself in the middle of a transition?
