.hymn + sunday.

Please join me for a new Sunday series where I will share verses from my favorite hymns, the stories behind the songs, and verses from the Bible.

How Great Thou Art
written by Carl Gustav Goberg

"O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hand hath made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!"

Did you know that "How Great Thou Art" was originally a Swedish poem? Author Carl Goberg wrote the poem after witnessing a spectacular lightning storm. It has since been translated to English and put to a meloday and sung all over the world.

Something I thought was funny - up until 1894 this hymn was sung in 3/4 time. From 1894 on, it has been sung in 4/4 time.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
Psalm 8:3,4
