.cinnamon sugar + salt.

I love pretzels. Especially the big soft ones. Even more especially when they are covered with cinnamon sugar. Yum. So I wanted to share a new favorite recipe for homemade pretzels. If you've been over to my house within the last month, chances are I've served these. (I'm a little bit addicted!) This recipe is so easy, you can even do it with two crying children sitting at your feet. Don't ask me how I know that.

Homemade Soft Pretzels

Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 tsp dried yeast (one package)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • melted butter
  • toppings (I like kosher salt and cinnamon sugar - but not on the same pretzel)
Instructions
  • Combine the sugar, yeast, and 1 cup of warm water in a small bowl and allow yeast to do its thing, about 5 minutes. (bloom is the term, but that always sounds gross to me)
  • Combine flour and salt in a mixer. When yeast mixture is frothy, slowly add to flour mixture until fully combined
  • Knead for approximately 5 minutes to create a soft dough
  • Form dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl. Cover and allow to rise until doubled, 30-40 minutes
  • Once dough has risen, punch down and shape onto a greased baking sheet (lately I have just been making little bite-size pieces; it's easy and then you don't feel so guilty about eating 10)
  • In small bowl, combine 1/2 cup warm water and baking soda
  • Brush baking soda mixture onto formed pretzels (this is what gives them that distinct pretzel taste)
  • Let formed pretzels rise for another 10 minutes
  • Place pretzels in a 400*F oven and bake for approximately 10 minutes, or until tops are a delicious looking golden brown
  • Once they are done, brush them with the butter and sprinkle your toppings on
Yum!!
